Poem Piet Paaltjens

Piet Paaltjens
1835 - 1894

As I once loved,
So did no one on earth.
But I've found, to whom I turned,
Only hearts of ice and stone.

Then my faith in friendship died,
My hope and my love disappeared.
And, no one ever hated,
no one so much as me.

And gloomy, bitter songs
Came out my mouth.
So bleak and bitter as I sang,
no one did so much as me.

The hating bored me in the end.
That forever singing and weeping.
I said nothing, and no one ever was so silent,
No one was so silent as me.
